The 2015/16 season will go down in LaLiga history as the first in which attendances over the course of the campaign topped 14 million. A record-breaking total of 14,014,099 people attended the 848 games staged across the Liga BBVA and Liga Adelante, including the six promotion playoffs fixtures.
This represents a continuation of the persistent growth in attendances in recent times and a significant increase on the 13,792,333 fans who passed through the gates during the 2014/15 season, a figure which itself was a new record at the time.
2014/15 saw attendances rise by 125,917, whereas this time round 344,465 more people flocked to stadiums in the top two tiers of Spanish football, meaning growth has almost tripled in the space of a year.
The substantial rise in crowd sizes in the 2015/16 season vindicates LaLiga's decision to move to the current system of kick-off times and to bank on new formats. This new record for attendances, coupled with the surge in television revenues, ensures that the curtain has come down on this campaign on an upbeat note and provides plenty of grounds for optimism ahead of next season.
