A well organised Granada
The visitors started the game the brighter team and this had a significant influence on the way the game progressed. The ‘new’ Granada headed by Jose Gonzalez deployed themselves well on the pitch, and looked well-organised. The players’ good positioning caused real problems for their opponents, particularly in the middle of the park.
Peñaranda’s pace and the legend of El-Arabi
The Venezuelan excelled once again. His pace caused no end of trouble for the Deportivo defence, who were missing one of their most important players in the form of Sidnei Rechel da Silva Junior. The South American produced a vertiginous, penetrating run into the area. As he bore down on goal, the Deportivo defence could only bring him down and concede a penalty. Youssef El-Arabi stepped up and converted, making him Granada’s all-time top scorer in the Liga BBVA (35), outscoring Enrique Porta.
Luis Alberto
A goal down, Deportivo were initially hesitant before making a quick recovery and generating some chances. Luis Alberto and Lucas Perez were the two Blanquiazules who created the most problems, but they both lacked fortune in front of Andres Fernandez’s goal.
An open game
Despite taking the lead, Granada were unable to finish off their opponents and were put under the cosh when Deportivo pushed hard in the final stages. The speed of their strikers saw the Andalusians retreat to the edge of their own area and the 1-0 lead never looked secure, with the Blanquiazules carving anumber of chances to draw level. Lucas Perez hit the post half an hour from time. Then, with the game almost over, Depor's German Lux was sent off, and Granada held out for an important victory.
