The South Hall of the VIP area of San Mames stadium today hosted the signing of a sponsorship agreement for the Women's First Division between energy company Iberdrola and the Spanish Football Federation.

The act featured the presence of Angel Maria Villar, the president of RFEF, Ignacio Sanchez Galan, the president of Iberdrola, Vicente Temprado, the president of RFEF's National Women's Football Committee, and Pedro Malabia, the head of women's football at LaLiga. They were joined by Athletic Club chairman, Josu Urrutia Telleria, and the president of the Basque Football Federation, Luis Maria Elustondo.

The agreement was signed at San Mames Stadium, but the day kicked off at the Iberdrola Tower, the tallest building in Bilbao. That was where the 16 Women's First Division clubs gathered to represent Spanish women's football on such a momentous day: "It's a hugely important step for the league to become known as LaLiga Iberdrola, because we will get so much more recognition," said Paloma, the captain of RCD Espanyol Women.

Following the tour of one of the Basque city's most iconic buildings, Athletic Club's stadium witnessed the 2015/16 season winner's trophy being presented to Athletic Women. A few minutes later, the event was held in which energy company Iberdrola was unveiled as the main sponsor of the Women's First Division.

"It's an honour to support Spanish women's football," assured Ignacio Sanchez Galan, the president of Iberdrola, who expressed his satisfaction on being able to back the sport and added that the company wishes "to take a step forward, which is something we are achieving with this agreement."

Pedro Malabia, the head of women's football at LaLiga, assured that the signing of the agreement is "something fundamental for this sport's continued growth on a daily basis. LaLiga launched a project aimed at supporting Spanish women's football and the name of a company like Iberdrola gives it a massive boost."

Meanwhile, Angel Maria Villar thanked all of those in attendance and congratulated Athletic Club Women on crowning themselves champions of the 2015/16 season. "I'm grateful that a company like Iberdrola has made a commitment to the sport and in particular to women's football," he finished by saying.
