Outstanding events
One of the most significant moments was seeing SD Eibar make their historic debut in the top flight. The team trained Gaizka Garitano played their debut game against Real Sociedad and Javi Lara became a hero by scoring the winning goals and Eibar’s first ever goal in the Liga BBVA.
Another newly promoted side, Córdoba CF, also had a starring role on the first matchday as they returned to the Liga BBVA after a 42 year hiatus. Also, they did so with the Santiago Bernabéu as a back drop in a game that ended with a 2-0 win for Real Madrid.
Also, the first two matchdays saw FC Barcelona make a good start as they became the only team in the managed to get two wins in their first two games, as they won 3-0 and 0-1 against Elche CF and Villarreal CF, respectively.
Star of the month
In terms of individual performances, there were some outstanding players, such as Leo Messi and his brace against Elche CF on the opening day. The Argentinian gave an early warning of a great season ahead with two goals against the side from Valencia who simply could not handle the quality of the Argentinian.
Best coach
Luis Enrique was named coach of the month after becoming the only coach with a 100 percent record after two games. The FC Barcelona coach began his time on the bench of the Catalan side well.
Best goal
The best goal of the matchday was scored by Abraham Minero, of SD Eibar, in the second matchday of the season in the Liga BBVA. The player from the Basque side placed a perfect right-footed shot into Miguel Ángel Moyà's top left-hand corner.
The most outstanding team
FC Barcelona made a good start on their journey towards the title, and their two wins were enough for them to be the best side of the month, as they took the maximum six points, and started September at the top of the table. Valencia CF, RC Celta and Granada CF also made a great start, and with four points, they were all temporarily in the UEFA Champions League spots.
Strange Fact
Javi Lara scored Eibar’s first goal in the Liga BBVA, a goal that will remain imprinted in the memory of their fans after they arrived in the top flight of Spanish football after two consecutive promotions. The Cordovan midfielder, who had recently joined the club, made history with a great free kick hit almost completely straight from the left hand side of the area that was defended by his opponents, Real Sociedad.
Surprise Player
Sevilla FC were one of the sides with the best statistics during August, the result of the players’ good work. Unai Emery managed to create a Sevilla side who performed at a high level throughout the year, however at the start of the season, there were already glimpses of the important value that some players would have out on the pitch.
Denis Suárez was one such player. The midfielder, who had recently arrived in the Andalusian capital, became a regular fixture in the Basque coach’s side during the early stage of the competition, and he was giving the chance to fully show off his qualities. The Galicia was a cornerstone in his side’s first two games, playing 163 minutes, and he helped Sevilla to get a win and a draw.
Latin America also had an outstanding role in the Liga BBVA
In a competition with such a Latina flavour, Fabián Orellana managed to capture plenty of attention in the first two games thanks to his performances for Celta. The side from Vigo made a great start to the season with Eduardo Berizzo in charge, and it was at this stage that the Chilean player emerged as one of the leaders in the Galician side’s attack. Two games, 180 minutes and two goals, one in each clash. This helped Celta to notch up four points and move into third place ahead of matchday three of La Liga.
