Real Betis have announced that Gustavo Poyet is to take over from Juan Merino as their first-team coach. The club has agreed a two-year contract with the Uruguayan.
Poyet's appointment signals the start of a new chapter for Betis and the return to our shores of a figure who attained legendary status in Spanish football during his playing days. The former midfielder spent seven seasons plying his trade for R. Zaragoza, helping them to win the Copa del Rey in 1994 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup the following year, the latter with victory over Arsenal in the final.
The 48-year-old – who favours an attack-minded, high-pressing passing game – has previously coached Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland and, this term, AEK Athens. He will be unveiled to the media this Wednesday at 13:00 CET, in the press room at the Estadio Benito Villamarin.
