Girona FC boosted their chances of getting promoted to the Liga BBVA by romping to a 3-0 win at D. Alavés on matchday 39 in the Liga Adelante.
Neither side dominated the opening stages of the game at the Estadio de Mendizorroza, although Fran Sadanza could have scored for the visitors after three minutes. The hosts reacted and Manu Barreiro and Juanma came close to scoring. However, it was Girona who would take the lead, with Jaime Mata netting in the 25th minute with a classy move, bringing the ball past a couple of defenders before shooting under Iñaki Goitia. Alavés tried to equalise before the break, with Manu Barreiro the danger man, but they headed to the dressing room at half-time still behind.
Alavés defender Víctor Laguardia had a chance to equalise early in the second half but in the 53rd minute Mata struck again to double Girona's lead, heading in from a corner. With the game all but lost, Alavés kept looking for a way back into the game but without any luck, and in the 87th minute Felipe Sanchón rounded off the visitors' win with a well-struck effort. Girona increase their grip on second spot thanks to this victory and are now two points ahead of R. Sporting, while the Basques stay in eighth place, on 53 points.
