- Based in Montevideo, Peñarol were founded on 28 September 1891 under the name Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club. On 13 December 1913 the club became known as Peñarol, and took the full name Club Atletico Peñarol on 12 March 1914.
- Over the course of their history, Peñarol have worn a yellow and black kit, the colours inspired by a famous locomotive called Rocket and chosen by members of a local railway trade union.
- In the professional era, Peñarol have won more Uruguayan league titles than any other club, having been crowned champions 39 times. The club have also won the Uruguayan Football Federation league in 1924 and the Torneo del Consejo Provisorio in 1926.
- On an intercontinental level, Peñarol rank third in Copa Libertadores victories, having lifted the trophy five times, and were the first club to win the Copa Intercontinental three times.
- Their eternal rivals in Uruguayan football are Nacional, a rivalry older than any in the footballing world outside of the British Isles. The teams have faced each other over 500 times, with Peñarol coming out on top overall.
