- The club was founded in 1899 in the northwestern German city of Bremen and since 1924 their home games have been staged at the Weserstadion.
- Bremen have claimed the Bundesliga title on four occasions, with their most recent domestic success coming back in 2004. They have also lifted the German Cup six times. The 2003/04 campaign marked the club's most successful season to date, as Thomas Schaaf led his side to a historic league and cup double.
- The German outfit won the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup, after running out 2-1 winners against AS Monaco in the showpiece at Lisbon's Estadio da Luz. Seventeen years on from that European final appearance, Bremen took their place in the last ever UEFA Cup final, held in May 2009. However, on this occasion the Germans slipped to a 2-1 extra-time defeat against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul.
- Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro is Bremen's leading all-time goalscorer. At 37, the veteran hitman is still going strong and is currently enjoying his third spell at the Weserstadion. Pizarro signed for Bremen in 1999, before his goalscoring exploits saw him secure a move to Bayern Munich two seasons later. He would subsequently return to Bremen in 2008, where he spent four seasons, before heading back to Bayern. When his contract at the Allianz Arena expired at the end of the 2014-2015 campaign he was back for a third stint at Bremen.
- The Bremen squad includes former R.Sporting and Rayo Vallecano man Alex Galvez, who joined the club in 2014, fresh from a three-year spell in LaLiga Santander. Other players to have graced LaLiga and plied their trade for the German club include Nelson Valdez, Raphael Wicky, Pierre Wome and Markus Rosenberg.
