- It was built for the 1982 World Cup held in Spain. It was, together with San Mamés, the Group D match venue. In all, three matches of this World Cup were played: Czechoslovakia vs Kuwait, France vs Kuwait and France vs Czechoslovakia.
- It replaced the old José Zorrilla Stadium, which had a capacity of 15,000 spectators and was Valladolid´s home from 1942 to 1982.
- On February 20, 1982 was officially opened with a match between Valladolid and Athletic Club which ended 1-0.
- Jorge Alonso scored the first goal in stadium history, achieved at 84 minutes of the match between "Vallisoletanos" and Basques.
- It has also been the stage of major concerts. Artists such as Julio Iglesias, Bruce Springsteen and the legendary Michael Jackson thrilled the fans on the "pucelano" ground.
