- Named in honor of the Sadar River, which flows through Pamplona and passes very close to its facilities.
- It was opened on 2 September 1967 with a three team tournament between At. Osasuna, Real Zaragoza and Vitoria de Setubal. The first match hosted in the ground was between the "Aragonés" team and Portuguese side. Pedras, from Vitoria de Setubal, was the first player to score in El Sadar.
- The first goal in LaLiga of the "Rojillos" on its new field was scored by Jordana on 17 September 1967 in a match played between Osasuna and R. Sporting de Gijón in the Second Division.
- Stadium construction works cost 51 million pesetas.
- The fog on El Sadar field is one of the most recognizable images of the stadium.
