Five main talking points from the opening weeks of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA SPORTS season

The 2024/25 LALIGA EA SPORTS season is already proving to be an exciting one and fans can’t wait for it to return with Matchday 10 on October 18th. Here, we take a look at five of the main talking points from the start of the current campaign

SÁB 12.10.2024

Robert Lewandowski’s dominance: The Polish striker has been the main man in attack for FC Barcelona and leads the scoring charts with 10 league goals already. He has been lethal both at home and away, scoring three goals at Montjuïc and seven on the road. His hat-trick against Deportivo Alavés during Matchday 9 was his standout performance, helping his club return to winning ways to remain top during this international break.

The LALIGA EA SPORTS standings: At the conclusion of Matchday 9, it’s FC Barcelona who lead the table with 24 points, and they are followed by Real Madrid on 21 points and Atlético de Madrid on 17 points. Teams such as Villarreal CF, CA Osasuna and Athletic Club have also had good starts and are in contention for the European positions. Then, there are others making noise, such as seventh-placed RCD Mallorca, who are followed by Rayo Vallecano, RC Celta and Real Betis. At this early stage, the relegation zone is occupied by Valencia CF, who are going through a tough spell, and by Real Valladolid and UD Las Palmas.

UD Las Palmas’ difficult start: The only team in the top tier yet to taste victory this season is UD Las Palmas, who have had three draws and six defeats in nine matches. That leaves them bottom of the table and the club made the first coaching change of the season, sacking Luis Carrión, who failed to reverse the team’s 23-match LALIGA EA SPORTS winless run which goes back to February 2024.

Jesús Navas’ final ELGRAN DERBI: Jesús Navas, the legendary Sevilla FC right-back, played his final ELGRAN DERBI against Real Betis in Matchday 9, achieving a 1-0 win thanks to a Dodi Lukebakio penalty. This was the player’s final derby and he became the player with the most appearances in this fixture with 28, overtaking Joaquín’s tally of 27 appearances.

The summer signings have hit the ground running: Several of the footballers who were signed during the summer window have stood out already, players such as:

Kylian Mbappé has made an impact at Real Madrid, scoring five goals and providing one assist in eight matches, all while showcasing his pace and dribbling skills to give LALIGA EA SPORTS defenders nightmares. He has shown why he is one of the world’s best forwards, adjusting to Spanish football little by little.

Giovani Lo Celso has returned to Real Betis and has been spectacular, displaying creativity and control in the team’s midfield. He has done well to replace Nabil Fekir and scored five goals across his first five games, making him one of the top scorers in LALIGA EA SPORTS.

Conor Gallagher has immediately adapted to life at Atlético de Madrid, making him a fan favourite already at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The England international has done well at winning the ball back, at the same time as getting forward in attack. With his determination, physicality and intensity, he has scored two goals already and been voted the MVP of two matches.

Ayoze Pérez is already having a positive impact at Villarreal CF, following his arrival in the summer. Across nine matchdays, he has featured in seven matches and scored six goals, meaning only top scorer Robert Lewandowski has more. His goals have also been crucial, as he has directly contributed to eight of El Submarino Amarillo’s 14 points. Some of his goals have even come in stoppage time, changing the course of games.

Borja Iglesias has been great so far after returning to RC Celta. He has played in all nine of the team’s matches so far, netting four goals to match Iago Aspas as the team’s top scorer. The striker is back to his best, after returning to Spain following last season’s loan to Bayer Leverkusen.
