First victory of the season for Espanyol

RCD Espanyol opened their account of Liga BBVA victories by beating Getafe CF 2-0 in their fifth match of the competition. Goals from Sergio García and Christian Stuani, who now have three each this season, were enough to keep the three points at home. 

Neither side dominated the Power8 Stadium in the first half. Espanyol started stronger and could have taken the lead through Sergio García in the first fifteen minutes, but Vicente Guaita's reflexes were enough to prevent the goal. As the minutes went by, it was the side from the capital, relying on the connection between Pablo Sarabia, Ángel Lafita and Karim Yoda, who started to win ground. Only the former was able to unsettle Kiko Casilla, though, with a mid-range effort that the home keeper comfortably held on to.

The half-time talk seemed to spur Getafe on, as they came out determined to open the scoring, but it was their opponents who netted first after one hour’s play. Sergio García, who has now found the net three times this season, headed home a great cross from Salva Sevilla, much to the delight of the Power8 Stadium. As Getafe poured forward, Christian Stuani dealt the visitors a hammer-blow with the second goal of the night to seal the first win of the year for Sergio González's men.
