FC Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-1 on matchday 28 of La Liga BBVA. As such, Luis Enrique’s men take a massive step forward in the fight for the title, as they obtain a four point lead over their direct rivals.
Madrid began with more intensity and Cristiano Ronaldo sent out a warning sign with a powerful shot that hit the bar in the opening exchanges of the game. Even so, Barcelona struck first and it was Jérémy Mathieu who put his side 1-0 up, with an unstoppable header following a corner taken by Leo Messi. Real Madrid did not give up, they continued to threaten Claudio Bravo’s goal and they got their reward in the 31’ minute thanks to an excellent back-heel from Karim Benzema to Cristiano that the Portuguese forward finished off for the equaliser.
Aware of what was at stake, the Whites continued to attack the opponent’s area. Claudio Bravo and the home defence stopped attacks from Cristiano and Gareth Bale that could have given Madrid the lead before half-time.
There was no change to the game’s pattern following the restart and Real Madrid came up with an excellent move led by Benzema that ended in a great stretching save by Bravo to prevent the 1-2. Just when the home side were having problems, Dani Alves hit a long pass that Luis Suárez controlled before managing to send an angled shot into Iker Casillas’ net. It was a lethal goal that put Barcelona ahead once again. From that moment onwards, the home side gained confidence and could have widened the margin through Messi and Neymar Junior. In the end, the score stayed at 2-1 and FC Barcelona got a win that keeps them top of the table.
