SÁB 03.12.2016
Around 2,000 people descended on Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, South Africa, to enjoy the biggest game of the LaLiga season so far, #ElClasico, and it is fair to say that they had a ball. The 1-1 draw between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid held these spectators rapt, as did the appearance by LaLiga ambassador and legend Christian Karembeu. Vicente Casado, LaLiga's managing director of international development, was also in attendance.
The match itself was only the headline event within a packed programme of activities staged in this iconic Joburg location, with admission free of charge and open to all. Furthermore, Karembeu was far from the only famous face on display: the hosting duties were performed by Carol Tshabalala, a presenter for SuperSport, LaLiga's official broadcaster in South Africa, while the performance by South African rapper and record producer Cassper Nyovest was another crowd-pleaser.
The day's action kicked off with a children's football clinic at the 3 Square Sports Facility in the township of Alexandra, which was attended by Casado and Karembeu. Around 40 youngsters revelled in the experience – held as part of LaLiga's drive to contribute towards the sporting development of children and young people and pass on the positive values associated with football – as they took to the pitch alongside the LaLiga ambassador.
The camp represented a hearty starter prior to the day's main course. The bonanza was concluded back in the centre of Johannesburg, where over 2,000 followers were sent into ecstasy after seeing goals from Luis Suarez and Sergio Ramos hit the back of the net on the giant screens which LaLiga had set up for the #ElClasico extravaganza.
