Elche CF picked up an important 2-1 win against RCD Espanyol to record its second victory of the current Liga BBVA campaign, both of which have come in the last two games. Two goals from former Parakeets forward, Ferrán Corominas, proved decisive as all three points stayed in the Estadio Martínez Valero.
Fran Escribà’s side took the initiative in the early stages of the match and controlled the first half. Shortly after the first quarter of an hour, the home side began to squeeze the Catalan visitors high up the pitch and cause them all kinds of problems. Only Kiko Casilla between the Blue and White sticks was able to prevent Manu del Moral and Coro from giving Elche an early lead. However, the home side finally got its just rewards before the break, when Coro stormed through the centre of Espanyol’s defence and finished off to give the newly promoted side a 1-0 cushion.
Espanyol came out for the second half with a lot more intensity and soon levelled matters. The inclusion of Pizzi and Thievy at the expense of Juan Fuentes and Christian Stuani seemed to work as it soon resulted in a goal for the Catalans. On the hour mark, Thievy got the equaliser thanks in big part to a great pass from Sergio García. With the momentum shifted Espanyol looked as though it might push for the win. However, Coro once again swung things in Elche’s favour by converting his chance which stemmed from some good work by Carles Gil on the left wing.
With this win Elche now climbs out of the relegation zone to 11th place. Espanyol meanwhile remain in seventh place.
