Home dominance

Eibar clearly dominated the match in the first 45 minutes. The home side showed their best, with Keko as the most active player. Eibar pushed and had the best chances. Despite the Espanyol goal in the 23rd minute, the game was led by the Basques.

Takashi Inui

The Japanese midfielder scored the first goal for the Basque team. Inui broke down the left wing to the corner of the box and, with a fierce right-foot shot, drilled the ball into the top corner after 14 minutes. Takashi is the fourth Japanese player to score in the Liga BBVA after Okubo, Aki and Shoji Jo.

Espanyol reply

The away side only needed seven minutes to equalise. Joan Jordan dribbled past a defender outside the box and unleashed unstoppable shot. Far from giving up, Eibar went in search for their second goal.

Borja Baston

Baston scored again, this time from the penalty spot, and has ten goals under his belt. In the 28th minute of the second half, Javi Lopez knocked Takashi Inui over inside the box and Baston was the man to take responsibility so putting Eibar ahead again. The striker extends his good scoring streak to three games now. Also, he had the clearest opportunity for his team in the 45th minute of the first half.

A European spot

With 2-1 on the scoreboard, Eibar looked for a third goal. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side never stopped pushing forward, but they were unable to add to the score. The Basques climbed up to sixth place and into a Europa League qualification berth.
