Real Zaragoza took the advantage in the promotion playoff final after beating UD Las Palmas 3-1 at the Estadio de La Romareda. Jonathan Viera had put the visitors in front, but goals from Diego Rico, Pedro Sánchez and Willian José sealed a comeback that thrilled the home fans.
La Romareda was dressed for the big occasion in a thrilling battle in the first-leg of the promotion playoff final and the encounter didn’t disappoint. The visitors started the better, they were more up for it and focused their attacks down the right wing, but it was the Argoneses who enjoyed the best early chance when a shot from Eldin Hadžić went over. Minutes later, and with Las Palmas dominating the play, Jonathan Viera opened the scoring by taking advantage of an error in the home defence. Far from sinking Zaragoza, that goal spurred on the hosts, who drew level in the match six minutes before half-time thanks to a thunderous strike from Diego Rico.
Two minutes hadn’t passed by after the restart when midfielder Pedro put Zaragoza in front. The Canarians, behind in the tie, looked to dominate possession against an Aragones side that put men behind the ball and looked for a definitive blow on the counter-attack. The lack of efficiency in front of goal in the end choked Las Palmas as Roque Mesa and Jonathan Viera missed their chances. Willian José didn’t miss on the other hand when 15 minutes from time he beat Raúl Lizoain to round off the scoring at 3-1.
