On the 30th of December Spanish football has a date with solidarity in the Santiago Bernabéu. The Professional Football Foundation and UNICEF’s Spanish Committee have organised, for the first time, a 'Champions for Life' match, pitting together the starts from the Liga de Fútbol Profesional. It is a union that was born thinking about the future, and will be held for the next three years.
LFP president Javier Tebas was the man responsible for getting things moving in a presentation that also featured Real Madrid chief Florentino Pérez, and UNICEF Spanish Committee’s vice president Juan Ignacio de la Mata Gorostizaga. LFP President Tebas thanked the football world for their "effort in helping children in difficult situations", the Spanish Committee of UNICEF, and requested from all of the clubs in Ligas BBVA and Adelante their "help, organisation and cooperation in these solidarity projects". For his part, Juan Ignacio De la Mata Gorostizaga thanked all of those involved on behalf of UNICEF’s Spanish Committee, and asked for all football fans to turn the Santiago Bernabéu into an authentic footballing party to aid children.
The Professional Football Foundation will donate the funds raised to four solidarity projects: 'SOS Yamena Nepal', a school building project that is the initiative of climber Iñaki Ochoa. The 'Hogar de Nazaret' initiative, lead by Padre Ignacio María Doñoro, helping children with schooling problems in Puerto Maldonado (Peru). The NGO 'Olvidados' and their 'Un dátil' programme which works in the Madrid neighbourhoods of Orcasitas and Pozo del Tío Raimundo giving food to families who find themselves in difficult economic situations, and the 'Bangasou Foundation', where the Bishop of Central Africa helps the survival children affected by aids. Real Madrid CF president Florentino Pérez explained that the power of football is immense, and for this they should "be proud that this sport is an instrument with enormous potential to help combat inequality and injustice". The host club’s chief also said: "This game gives us life, and it will be a great opportunity to show what football is capable of doing for people".
It will be a distinct football match in which the principal stars of Liga BBVA and Liga Adelante join together with the goal of raising funds for UNICEF’s Spanish Committee, who will then use to help vulnerable children, and for the LFP’s social projects through the Professional Football Foundation.
