Cape Town experienced the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in a very special way thanks to #LaLigaCapeTown, a unique event that featured the first-ever official live screening of a LaLiga match in Africa. The city was abuzz for a spectacle that drew hundreds of South African fans.
The Sea Point Promenade Park was the setting, where two giant screens were set up to enable attendees to congregate and soak up all the excitement and passion of Spanish football in style.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas was in attendance to witness this latest step in the drive to take the competition all over the world and highlighted his "pride at sharing an experience like this with all the residents of Cape Town." He was joined by Fernando Sanz, LaLiga's director of international projects and first global ambassador, as well as Liga BBVA ambassadors Gaizka Mendieta and Patrick Kluivert, plus Antonio Barrada, LaLiga's country manager for South Africa.
Members of the public started arriving from 13:00 (local time) for a jam-packed day of free activities geared towards all LaLiga fans. A particular highlight was the involvement of a group of 30 or so children from five disadvantaged local communities, who had an extremely special day playing games and taking part in workshops in the company of Mendieta and Kluivert.
Music was also among the attractions for those Capetonians who made their way down to the park, as well as exclusive gifts, a freestyle competition that thrilled and wowed every single person, and the chance to enter a competition to win two tickets to Spain to watch a match in the flesh next season.
The success of the event, which made for an unforgettable day in Cape Town, represents another step forward in LaLiga's international expansion, in which the organisation continues to cross frontiers in order to take Spanish football to all corners of the planet.
