Hard work bears fruit, as RCD Mallorca are showing. After a difficult start to the seasonthey had two points from six games, but now the Balearic side are the in-form outfit in Liga Adelante with five consecutive wins. LFP.es spoke exclusively to Cristian Bustos (Petrel, Alicante, 25/03/1983), one of the side’s most important players, about their recovery and success

LFP.es: After a difficult start, you’ve now registered five consecutive wins. What has been the key to the change?
Bustos: We've got a great group, that's the first thing, but we also needed patience because we had a change of coach just before the start of the Liga Adelante season. There were new concepts and ideas. The side played well and luckily our confidence has grown with the result we have attained. Everyone has played their part and is happy with the coach. We don't want the run to stop.

"Karpin has always given us a lot of tranquillity, he told us things would work out because the side was working well"

LFP.es: How were those difficult moments when the results weren't coming?
Bustos: It's true that when you’ve got so few points, everyone starts to doubt themselves. In this sense, you have a little less confidence. But Valeri Karpin has always given us a lot of tranquillity, and told us that things would work out because the side was working well. The boss has worked a lot with us on a tactical level, but above all on a mental level.

LFP.es: You were conceding a lot of goals, but in the last five matches you’ve only let in two. Have you worked in a special way to improve this aspect?
Bustos: Yes, we've worked a lot on the defence. It was one of the most important things for the coach. It's true that it was a little difficult, because we were a lot of new players in a new system. We made a lot of errors, which were punished, but the most important thing is that we were convinced that the system was going to work. Now you can see the results and the side is in one of those moments that are necessary to grow as a block.

LFP.es: You speak very highly of your boss Valeri Karpin. What’s it like to work under him?
Bustos: He’s always given us a lot of tranquilly and confidence in difficult times. He’s someone who genuinely loves the sport; he looks at everything in detail and is very meticulous in his work, and has both individual and collective videos. He does a very good job and has helped the side gain self-confidence. We hope that the side will keep on growing.

"We're lucky enough to have a player like Marco Asensio; he is magnificent and we have to enjoy him"

LFP.es: You have some hot property in Liga Adelante like Marco Asensio. His quality is incredible despite his age..
Bustos: We're lucky enough to have a player like him, with such innate talent. A lot of the side's expectations sit on his shoulders and it is admirable to see how he takes it all in his stride. He has great quality, is a great player and very mature for his age. We will enjoy him and hope he can help us achieve our best.

LFP.es: Personally, how has your adaptation to the side been?
Bustos: Personally it was very easy, although there were a lot of changes at the club, including the coach just before the Liga Adelante season started. We had to adapt to the new boss's ideas, but working with Valeri Karpin is bearing its fruits. I’m completely adapted. I always speak about the good feeling there is in the group, which is quite a formidable group of players.

LFP.es: Why did you join Mallorca?
Bustos: When I rescinded my contract with Vigo I wanted to find a club that gave me illusion and a big challenge. When Mallorca called I didn't have my doubts, they’re a big club in Spain and it was an important and nice challenge. I wanted to come to a big club with a high level. I'm moved by motivation and this is one. We will grow little by little and we will see where we can get to. In football you never know. It would be brilliant to go up again and get the club back to where it belongs.
