Asdrúbal puts Las Palmas top overnight

His goal a minute before the final whistle broke the resistance of a Leganés who fail to climb out of the danger zone.

After their game with CE Sabadell was postponed due to the weather, UD Las Palmas were back in action at their own stadium. The Canary Islanders’ home record (five wins and two draws) was an indication of their strength, but their guests, CD Leganés, were not about to gift them anything.

In fact, their visits to the island have always been uncomfortable for the home side: just two defeats in eight games.

Las Palmas went out on the field looking to take the reins, and the Madrid side allowed them to do so, threatened only by a free kick struck by Nauzet that took a slight deflection, and a one-on-one between Araujo and goalkeeper Queco Piña, who came out on top. Leganés worked hard and, though they rarely set foot in Casto’s area, they went into the break with the score level.

After half time, the Canary Islanders clenched their teeth and in three minutes (the 54th and the 57th) they could have opened the scoring, but they were left without their reward, with Araujo’s strike stopped by Santamaría on the goal line, and Nauzet sending a shot wide from inside the area. Leganés kept their shape despite the pressure from the home side. Paco Herrera sent Valerón onto the field, hoping he would be the key that opened the door. After a few failed attempts, Asdrúbal collected the ball in the box and after several dummies his shot found the net (89th minute). The goal made the Gran Canaria Stadium erupt with joy, knowing that their team would be leaders overnight.
