Club Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea FC produced a goalless draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, meaning that the match at Stamford Bridge will produce the finalist.
The Vicente Calderón provided a spectacular atmosphere as it hosted a match that proved as tight as was expected. Atlético de Madrid clearly dominated possession while Chelsea tried to surprise its opponent on the counter. The rojiblancos, who were more willing press in search of a win, had the best of the chances. The first fell to Koke, who nearly caught Peter Čech off-guard after a corner-kick. Before the break, Gabi fired a long-range warning shot that whistled past the left post.
It was a similar story after the restart. The home side tried to penetrate the wings and whip balls into the box. A clearance from the keeper Schwarzer, who replaced the injured Čech, nearly made it 1-0 but the Australian stopper quickly rectified his error. Meanwhile, the London side made attempts to push forward with runs from ex-rojiblanco, Fernando Torres. In the end, the deadlock remained despite the fact that the rojiblancos went all out to score the first goal of the tie.
