The Media Agencies Association, Mediapro, Prisa and the Liga de Fútbol Profesional
signed an agreement on Tuesday, at the LFP headquarters, for the protection of intellectual property rights, in general, and particularly in football, in order to combat piracy that harms the legitimate holders of football rights for television and other audiovisual media. The event was attended by Gerardo Mariñas, the president of the Media Agencies Association, Jaume Roures, a founding partner of Mediapro; José Manuel Gómez Bravo corporate director of Intellectual Property at Prisa and Javier Tebas, the president of the LFP.
Those who signed the agreement have committed to collaborating in the persecution of actions and crimes against copyright and intellectual property in football, as well as
promoting the self-regulatory mechanisms together with the public administrations in favour of copyrights and intellectual property rights. On the other hand, the agreement also establishes that advertising investments are limited to media, portals, websites and editors who comply with the Intellectual Property Law.
Gerardo Mariñas was the first to inform the attendees of the importance of this agreement. "At the Media Agencies Association we work with 95% of the advertising from
the audiovisual world. With this initiative, we are looking for a legal environment that
respects intellectual property and, thus, not to invest in those sites that are declared
illegal", stated the president of the Media Agencies Association.
For his part, Jaume Roures spoke of what he considers a lack of commitment from the Spanish government. "The administration has not shown the level of sensitivity necessary
for audiovisual piracy. This does no good to the promotion of Marca España. It does
serious damage to football and the clubs. It is not just a problem for a couple of private
companies and their success, it is a global problem". Roures added that "every element
should be implicated because piracy affects the whole of society".
Finally, Tebas reinforced his message during the signing: "If we don't reduce piracy, Spanish football will be in ruins. This agreement is a fight to make sure that we do not
advertise on websites that provide illegal football content". "If we do not obtain the
collaboration of the companies, legislative reform and financial support, our football will
become mediocre and recovering a mediocre league is very difficult", added the president
of the LFP.
The entities that signed the agreement for the protection of intellectual property and audiovisual rights in football will inform their associates and clients of the detection of
media platforms, portals, websites and editors who are declared 'pirates' by the competent authorities. In addition, there is a commitment from the parties to raise awareness among their partners and companies of the principles included in the agreement in order to globally favour a respectful environment with intellectual property rights in football and their diffusion on any media platform, particularly digital ones.
