Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid played out a goalless draw in the quarterfinals of their UEFA Champions League first leg at the Vicente Calderón. This result leaves everything to play for at the Santiago Bernabéu, and we take a look at the historical numbers of both sides when they find themselves in these kind of situations.
Real Madrid go into the second leg following a 0-0 in Europe for the ninth time. In seven of the previous eighth times they have gone through. Their last 0-0, against Spartak Moscow in the European Cup quarterfinals saw them eliminated, given the Russian outfit won the second leg 1-3.
In all previous cases Real Madrid have gone through after drawing 0-0 when playing the second leg at home. The last time they did so was against Romanian side CS Independenta Baia Mare, winning 5-2 at the Bernabéu in the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners Cup. They went through against Spartak Moscow 2-0 in the 1981 European Cup quarterfinals, 3-0 against Dynamo Kiev, and twice in the 1970-71 Cup Winners Cup: against Hibernian FC in the last 32, and against PSV Eindhoven in the semis 2-1.
The first time this happened in the European Cup was in 1958-59, when Real Madrid downed SC Wiener 7-1 in the quarters.
On the other hand, it is the fourth time that Atlético Madrid go into a European away knockout tie with a 0-0 scoreline attained at the Vicente Calderón. They have a lot to take hear from, given they have gone through each time they have attained this result, and reached the final each season that it previously happened.
The first time was in 1973-74 against Galatasaray AŞ in the first round of the European Cup, as they won 0-1 in Turkey. That season they reached the final, however Bayern Munich downed the Madrid side. The next case came in 2009-10, when they faced Sporting Club de Portugal in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League, drawing 2-2 in Lisbon as they went through on away goals on their way to lifting the trophy.
