FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are set for a final matchday on which emotions will be running sky high, with no less than the Liga BBVA trophy at stake. This will be the seventh time in the history of the competition that Los Azulgranas and Los Blancos have battled it out for the title on the final matchday.
1928/29 season
The origin of it all. The final day of the first ever championship, contested by 10 teams, ended with a thrilling tie between Barcelona and Madrid on 23 points apiece. Los Azulgranas, however, had a game in hand still to play against Arenas Club de Getxo, and they did not spurn the opportunity to break the stalemate with Los Blancos. The game ended with a 2-0 victory to the Catalan side, with two goals by Manuel Parera.
1959/60 season
Barcelona won the title after beating Zaragoza 5-0, despite finishing level with Real Madrid on 46 points, who also won 1-0 away to Las Palmas. With the two clubs tied on their head-to-head record as well, the Catalan outfit took the title on overall goal difference.
1991/92 season
Real Madrid headed into the final game with a one-point advantage over Barcelona, but lost 3-2 to CD Tenerife and Barça came out on top in their game against Athletic Club (2-0).
1992/93 season
This was a repeat of the story from the previous season. Los Blancos, one-point ahead of Barcelona, travelled to Tenerife for the final match of the season. They lost 2-0, whilst Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 1-0 and finished as champions once again.
2006/07 season
The famous 'Capello Liga' won by Real Madrid. Under the guidance of the famous coach, Real Madrid gradually chipped away at Barcelona's lead as the games went by and their fate was in their own hands in the last match. They had the upper hand with the head-to-head record in their favour, meaning that victory over RCD Mallorca would guarantee them the trophy. Barcelona piled on the pressure, doling out a 5-1 drubbing away to Gimnastic, but Real Madrid covered themselves in glory by staging a comeback against Mallorca to win 3-1.
2009/10 season
The latest precedent. Pep Guardiola's Barcelona headed into the final game with a one-point lead over Real Madrid. The Catalans left nothing to chance and wrapped up the title by annihilating R. Valladolid (4-0), whilst the Madrilenians could only muster a draw against Malaga CF (1-1).
