Leo Messi has confirmed his status as one of La Liga BBVA's all time greats. He is now the top scorer in Spain's top-flight competition, surpassing Telmo Zarra, who held the record since the 1954-55 season. With 253 goals to his name, now all that's left for Messi is to add to his tally and leave his future competitors with even more catching up to do.

Messi took five fewer seasons than Zarra to reach this landmark, yet another achievement to his name. The Argentine is already Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer as well as the non-Spaniard with most caps for the azulgranas. He also hit the 400 goal mark (in all competitions) earlier this season, in gameday 6, in the match against Granada.

'The Flea,' as he's known, has also just celebrated the tenth anniversary of his La Liga BBVA debut, which was October 16th, 2004. Ten years on, Messi is now a legend in the game and goes on gathering records, both at an individual and collective level.

With Barcelona, the Argentine has won six La Liga BBVA titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two Copas del Rey, six Spanish Supercups and two UEFA Supercups, among others. He has also lifted FIFA's Ballon d'Or on no fewer than four occasions.
