An end-to-end opening
Anoeta played host to a meeting of two enterprising teams who both look to go on the front foot whenever possible. The upshot was a breathless and highly open start to the game, with the action repeatedly swinging from one area to the next. There was no feeling their way into it from either side in a match that ultimately could have gone either way.
Rulli thwarts Viera from the spot
Las Palmas threatened on several occasions in the opening exchanges, one of which saw Iñigo Martinez trip up Aythami Artiles, leading the referee no choice but to give a penalty. Jonathan Viera stepped up, only for Geronimo Rulli's instincts to prove spot on, as the goalkeeper dived the right way and palmed away the strike to keep it all square.
Las Palmas find the breakthrough
Quique Setien's men did not allow this disappointment to get the better of them, however, continuing to dictate proceedings and take the initiative. Thanks to this approach, the visitors earned an indirect free-kick in the box near the end of the first half and on this occasion they made no mistake. The ball was touched back to Willian Jose, who blasted home past the defenders on the line to hand the Canary Islanders the lead that they had been pushing for practically from kick-off.
An intriguing finale
With the peace of mind of being a goal in front, Las Palmas were able to sit back and attempt to pick their opponents off on the counter-attack. Real Sociedad, by contrast, were forced to pour forward in a bid to get back on terms, with Yuri Berchiche seeing plenty of the ball up the left flank but unable to fashion an equaliser. It made for absorbing viewing and in the end the away team managed to hold on, clinching their fourth victory in five matches to pull further away from the relegation picture.
