Why are the players from Girona called 'albirrojos'?

Girona FC, in its 85 birthdays, prepares to enjoy its eighth consecutive season in Liga Adelante, with the aim to be promoted to the top flight of Spanish football. And it does so with its traditional dress shirt with red and whites stripes of which the players and fans of the Catalan team call 'albirrojos'.

The kit that we see today in the picture directed by Pablo Machín takes the colours from the coat of arms of the city, some colours that at least in the trousers have been varied as time passes. Originally they started as black, then they went to blue, finishing with one of the main colours of the highest part: Red.
