Established on March 10, 1923, Villarreal CF has played 16 seasons in Liga BBVA, where it has consolidated as a sports project that has received the fruit of the leadership this season. Marcelino Garcia Toral´s men are occupying the first place in the standings for the first time in their history and have been placed as one of the teams in better shape of the tournament.
The Castellon club grew from the lower divisions and got his first promotion to Liga BBVA in the 1998/99 season. Change of category was more difficult than expected and got relegated to Liga Adelante. However, in 1999/2000 season, they achieved a new promotion that opened a period of 12 seasons in the top flight of Spanish football.
It became the revelation team and made the leap to Europe, strengthened as one of the solidest teams in the championship. In the memory of the fans there is the historic second place in the 2007/2008 season, the third in 2005, and fourth in the 2010/2011 campaign.
Despite relegation in the 2011/2012 season, the team overcame the difficulties and returned in one year to Liga BBVA to return directly to the first positions of the table. This year, its spectacular start to the season has awarded Villarreal a deserved leadership that is already written in its history books.
