The Canary Islands-based club have booked their place in the Danone Nations Cup National Final, the biggest tournament in children's football, which will take place in Barcelona on 20, 21 and 22 May at the RCDE Stadium. The fair play award went to UD San Nicolas's Sergio Medina, while CD Tenerife picked up the accolade for best coaching staff. Over 1,000 children from 64 teams on the Canary Islands from Las Palmas and Tenerife took part in four emotion-filled days of football action.
64 teams made up of boys and girls between 10 and 12 years old from Las Palmas and Tenerife battled it out from 22 until 24 April for a berth in the National Final in Barcelona on 21 and 22 May at the RCDE Stadium. After an intense weekend, it was UD Las Palmas who saw off CD Tenerife in an enthralling match that ended 4-2.
It was a unique and unforgettable football experience for the 64 teams and over 1,000 boys and girls who were involved. The Consolation Cup known as the Bazar Sport Trophy went to Union Viera for a second straight year after their 1-0 win over Sporting Club Tenerife.
When the tournament came to a close, UD Las Palmas midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron and Danone Canarias representative Andres Ordoñez gave out several awards, with Sergio Medina Godoy (UD San Nicolas) picking up one for fair play as an individual, CD Tenerife clinching one for the best coaching staff and AD Los Toscones winning one for fair play as a team.
UD Las Palmas join Real Racing Club Santander, who won the northern section, and will travel to Barcelona to compete in the National Final alongside the other clubs who come out on top in their respective regions. The next stop will be the World Final which is scheduled to be held in Paris after the summer.
