D.Alaves have offered fans the chance to take away and keep a chunk of the pitch from their Mendizorroza stadium as a souvenir. After 18 years service, the turf is to be relaid in preparation for a new season in the top flight of Spanish football, but rather than simply toss the old one away Alaves have given fans the opportunity to simply pick up a piece of the club's past.
Under the banner "Take away a piece of Albiazul (White and Blue) history" the Basque side reminded supporters what the turf had experienced over the last two decades. "Two promotions, games from the Primera Division, the UEFA Cup, the Segunda and Segunda B divisions, hundreds of goals and matches played out in rain, snow, freezing conditions and sun..."

(More than a hundred Albiazul fans have arrived first thing to take away a piece of the pitch)
Alaves, who were beaten in the UEFA Cup final by Liverpool back in 2001, were promoted back to the Liga BBVA at the end of last month after a 10-year absence, and went on to make sure of the top spot in the Liga Adelante, ahead of CD Leganes, in the final round of matches.
