Following matchday 24, the Liga Adelante table is now as tight as it has been all season. With UD Las Palmas losing in Lugo and R. Sporting and Girona FC beating Albacete B. and CD Tenerife respectively, three teams are now joint top with 47 points apiece. There are other teams also enjoying excellent streaks of form like Real Betis, who have gone ten games unbeaten, and others who were able to put an end to poor runs like CD Lugo and CD Numancia, both of whom got back to winning ways. In terms of individual accomplishments, Borja Gastón’s performance stood out. The Real Zaragoza striker bagged a brace to bring his tally to 15 for the season, meaning he only trails the division’s top scorer by one goal.
Three teams tied at the top
The weekend’s action concluded with Sporting, Las Palmas and Girona joint top of the table. Las Palmas were first up with a match where Nauzel Alemán’s goal made it seem as though the league leaders would continue their habit of winning in Lugo’s ground. However, the home side answered back and were able to turn the score around with two Iriome González’s goals.
Sporting did not waste the opportunity this presented and, although they went behind at home to Albacete, the Asturians were able to claim all three points thanks to a Jony goal two minutes from the final whistle. After that came Girona’s victory in Tenerife, with the Catalans hitting the mark quickly. Pablo Machín’s charges were mentally prepared and aware of their rivals’ results, and on the eight-minute mark Florian Lejeune broke the deadlock, which ended up being the only goal of the game.
Betis, 10 matchdays unbeaten
Despite conceding a Ponferradina equaliser in added time, Pepe Mel’s players’ good run continues with the Andalusians extending their unbeaten streak to ten matchdays. Betis have recorded seven wins and three draws from their last ten games, their best run of form this season.
Lugo back to winning ways after a nine-matchday drought
The Galician outfit got back to winning waysand could not have picked a better side to do it against. Las Palmas, the current league leaders, travelled to take on a team down their luck of late, and after taking the lead it looked as though the game would run out to a logical conclusion. But that could not have been further from what happened. Quique Setién’s players appeared in the second half and were able to turn the result around with just 15 minutes to go, and thus put an end to their poor run of form.
Numancia get first win in seven matchdays
Numancia were also experiencing a bad spell of results. Juan Antonio Anquela’s men had gone two months without a win before CE Sabadell’s visit on the weekend. The division’s bottom-placed side were already behind in the third minute when the home team took the lead through Sergi Enrich. The striker scored his eleventh goal of the Liga Adelante campaign, and in the space of 24 matchdays has already improved on his tally from last year, when he found the back of the net on 10 occasions. Numancia killed off the game in the second half with goals from Vicente Pérez and Julio Álvarez. Borja Bastón, one goal off the top
The Zaragoza striker scored the opening two goals in the clash against Barcelona B which finished 4-0. Borja Bastón is now on 15 goals, finding the target four times in his last three games, and is now just one away from the league’s top scorer, Rubén Castro, who is currently on 16.
