The current LaLiga Santander campaign is the most hotly-contested in the last 25 years, and in Europe as a whole

The most standout feature of this current season is how closely-fought the competition has been so far. For the first time since the rules changed to make a win worth three points instead of two, the distance between first-placed and ninth in the table is only five points. FC Barcelona are currently topping LaLiga Santander with a total of 25 points along with Real Madrid, who are level on points.

You have to go back 25 years to find the most recent occasion when a league was so evenly balanced. In the 1995/96 seasin, Atletico de Madrid were top with 30 points while Sporting de Gijon were in ninth place on 19 points. That season was a turning point in the history of LaLiga, as it was when three points for a victory was introduced.

What’s more, LaLiga Santander is the most even league in Europe. Its competitiveness and the level of its teams make it one of the most attractive competitions in the world.
