Ten things you probably didn’t know about the Vallecas stadium

  • The Vallecas Stadium has changed its name four times. It was called the ‘Nuevo Estadio de Vallecas’ between  1976 and 2001; later, it was changed to Campo de Futbol de Vallecas Teresa Rivero between 2001 and 2011; in 2011 it was re-named Campo de Futbol de Vallecas and is now known as the Estadio de Vallecas.

 

  • Adolfo Suarez officiated the opening of the stadium on the 5th of June 1976.

 

  • The Vallecas goal net was christened by Real Valladolid’s Andalusian forward Manolo Alvarez during the first game ever played in the stadium.

 

  • Rayo Vallecano’s field became a popular venue for music during the eighties. Some of the artists who played there include Bob Dylan, Miguel Ríos, Luz Casal, Barricada and Metallica fueron algunos de los artistas que actuaron en él.

 

  • Queen played one of the last concerts of their career in the Estadio de Vallecas on the 3rd of August in 1986.

 

  • With its seating capacity for 14.790 spectators, is the stadium with the sixth-least capacity of the five major European leagues.   
  • The stadium is host to two national federations: the Spanish Federation of boxing and the Spanish Chess Federation.

 

  • The first Final Phase of the Liga Superiberica de rugby was played in the stadium in 2009.

 

  • Since the death last January of Rayo’s ex-goalkeeper Wilfred Agbonavbare, the principle entrance of the stadium carries his name. 
  • The Estadio de Vallecas has been the setting for games for the Rayo Second division B team as well as UEFA CUP games.
