Ten things you might not know about La Rosaleda

A look at facts, curiosities and anecdotes about the stadium that Malaga CF call home.

  • The first stone was laid on the 21st of April 1936 although the construction work was delayed for four years by the onset of the Spanish civil war.
  • On the 13th of april 1941 the first match was played on its pitch. Due to the flooding of the Baños del Carmen stadium by a strong storm CD Malacitano played against AD Ferroviaria in La Rosaleda. The stadium was not, however, officially opened until the 14th of September later that year in a friendly match between CD Malaga and Sevilla FC.
  • Lourdes Alonso, daughter of the ruling Mayor of the time Pedro Luis Alonso, had the honorary duty to kick off the first ball at the inauguration match.
  • Pelé, one of football's most legendary players, played a game in La Rosaleda in 1967. The Brazilian star took part in the competition for the Trofeo Costa del Sol playing under the colours of Santos FC.
  • La Rosaleda was the official host of the FIFA 1982 World Cup. Three games were played in the group phase there: Scotland-New Zealand, USSR-New Zealand, USSR-Scotland.
  • The stadium has a gate Puerta 0. It is named in honour of the club's player, trainer, technical secretary and advisor Antonio Benitez.
  • On the 10th of February of 2009 La Rosaleda was the seat of the English Federation friendly competition played between the England under-21s and Ecuador's national team.
  • The Spanish football selection first played in La Rosaleda on the 21st of February of 1971 in a classification match for the 1974 World Cup against Greece (3-1).
  • The stadium has its own medical centre inside.
  • La Rosaleda has been the host venue for big names in music throughout its history. George Michael, Paul Simon, Shakira, Genesis and Alejandro Sanz are just some of the artists who have performed in the Malagan stadium.
