Not even the most optimistic of fans could have imagined that SD Eibar would have the best season in its history last year. Their 75th anniversary, on 25 May, after the victory over D. Alavés (1-0), was the day chosen to make dreams come true in a town with a population of 30,000: the historic promotion to the Liga BBVA.
The Armeros, with their hard work and ambition, managed to finish the 2013-14 season with 71 points, and become Liga Adelante champions for the first time in the history. They sealed their promotion to the Spanish topflight on matchday 40, but they had to wait until the final match to make sure they finished at the top of the table, making for a thrilling finish.
"We have worked hard for promotion, it is no coincidence", stated Gaizka Garitano when he and his team's achievement had begun to sink in. The hard work of the Basque coach, Xabi Irureta fewest goals conceded record, the strength of Raúl Navas and Yuri Berchiche's defence and Jota Peleteiro's eye for goal came together to produce a dream season. The achievement made news around the footballing world and had the Municipal de Ipurua faithful in raptures, match after match.
Eibar have exceeded expectations this season, proving that they are in the Liga BBVA to stay. The Basque side's hopeful start means that their opponents now see them as one of the breakthrough teams in the 2014-15 season.
