The 10-times European Champions have their work cut out to make the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after losing 2-0 to Vfl Wolfsburg in Germany on Wednesday. After their Clasico win on the weekend, they conceded twice in quick succession in the first half, and now need a big comeback to turn the tie around at the Bernabeu on April 12.

Real Madrid had the ball in the back of the net after only two minutes in Germany but Cristiano Ronaldo’s effort was ruled out for offside and it was the hosts who instead took charge in the first half. Casemiro tangled with Andre Schurrle to concede a penalty after 18 minutes and Ricardo Rodriguez became the first player to beat Keylor Navas in a Champions League game when he netted from the spot. Soon after, the Germans extended their lead when Bruno Henrique’s low cross into the area was turned in by Maximilian Arnold.

Zinedine Zidane had been forced into a first-half change as Karim Benzema was replaced by Jese due to an injury, but Real Madrid still pushed hard in the second half. Gareth Bale was particularly active down the left flank as Los Blancos sought a valuable away goal, while Wolfsburg sat deep and looked to play on the break. Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos went close, while Navas made a couple of important saves to keep the score at 2-0.
