RCD Espanyol are on their way back up to LaLiga Santander

Fans of the team managed by Vicente Moreno Peris can now celebrate their return to LaLiga Santander on the back of a consistently brilliant season in which they have racked up 78 points so far. They have run out winners in 23 matches, drawn a further eight and strung together a 15-game unbeaten run. As if that were not enough, they have topped the LaLiga SmartBank table for eight consecutive games, fending off RCD Mallorca and UD Almeria, who had held the top spot in previous months.

With 66 goals for and just 23 against, Los Pericos are flying high as the top scorers and the tightest at the back. They are a very well-balanced team, solid in defence and a threat going forward, but above all they are a very tightly-knit group who have pulled ahead and completed their mission before the end of the campaign, with six games still to play and having only played a single season in LaLiga SmartBank.

We take you through the key areas and the star players behind the triumphant return of the Barcelona-based side.

Vicente Moreno is the architect behind a team who have shown themselves to be solid and effective in their bid to achieve their goal for the season: to return to LaLiga Santander. The Valencian manager's go-to formation is a 4-4-1, accounting for 43% of his team's appearances this term. The variant most often employed by Moreno has been a tweak to a 4-3-2-1.

One of the key aspects of this team is the way they press their opponents. The Blanquiazul defensive line is the highest in the whole competition. This explains why Los Pericos have been the team to ensure the ball spends the most time in the opposing team's half. In fact, they are the fifth best team at winning the ball back high up the pitch and they have received the third-fewest shots on their own goal in the division.

Moreno is quite the expert at containing his opponents. The Barcelona-based side have conceded the fewest goals so far this season with just 23 against, and have kept clean sheets in more than half of their matches.

On the front foot, RCD Espanyol are nothing short of lethal. They top the stat for the team to finish off spells of possession with a shot in LaLiga SmartBank, and they are the second most efficient finishers in the championship.

They are also a veritable handful for their opponents, given that they average the highest number of shots per game at 13, while being the team that needs the fewest attempts to score. Los Blanquiazules find the back of the net once every 7.4 attempts.

The Catalans are also the freest-scoring team in LaLiga SmartBank, only failing to find the back of the net in seven of the 38 games played. They are particularly deadly from set pieces, having scored the most goals from dead-ball situations in the competition, with a total of 19.

The fact that they are the most miserly team at the back is due in large measure to the man between the sticks: the irreplaceable Diego Lopez. The Galician goalkeeper has played every single minute for Los Pericos and has proven a veritable fortress. He has been a key figure for Moreno, making 75 saves and preventing 22 goal-bound shots from hitting the back of the net.

He shares the merit with a solid defensive line who are quick to cover and win the ball back, cutting out many of their opponents' attacks before the goalkeeper has to get involved. It includes stars such as Adria Pedrosa, David Lopez, Fernando Calero, Oscar Gil and Leandro Cabrera, who has amassed the most minutes in an Espanyol shirt. Cabrera has made the sixth-highest number of clearances in the competition and third-highest number of long passes to reach their intended recipient. David Lopez, meanwhile, is one of the Valencian manager's key players. He is having a superb season as the best ball-winner, the best in aerial duals for the Catalans and the fifth-most prolific passer in LaLiga SmartBank.

The Espanyol engine room features Sergi Darder, with Nico Melamed, Fran Merida, Keidi Bare and Oscar Melendo in charge of distributing the ball, organising the play and crafting moves to threaten the opposing goal. This group of players have been rotated to adapt to the needs of each individual game, turning many of their passes into assists for the front line and linking up perfectly with the rest of the players to achieve their objectives. Melamed, with five strikes to his name, is the fifth highest goalscorer for the Catalan club, and has also unleashed the fifth highest number of shots. Darder is a deft distributer of the ball, and not only one the team's best passers, but has also produced three assists, making him the team's third best in this department, along with Raul de Tomas, Oscar Gil and Pedrosa.

And up front? Three attacking titans who have given their all and still not satiated their goalscoring appetites: Javi Puado, Adrian Embarba and Raul de Tomas.

The latter has been a key player for the Catalan side this season. He is the top scorer in LaLiga SmartBank with 22 goals, has the highest number of shots in the competition together with Uros Djurdjevic and, together with his teammate Embarba, sits second in terms of the number of high-impact actions he generates. Embarba is one of the most influential players in the final third in the competition and the top assist provider with 14. He has notched up nine goals for his personal account and is one of the players who gets the most shots off and who averages the most passes in the final third in the league. The final member of the lethal attack is Javi Puado. The young striker from Barcelona has netted 11 goals and provided eight assists. He is the second-highest scorer and assister for RCD Espanyol and has the third highest number of assists in LaLiga SmartBank.

Together with the rest of Espanyol's players, the three of them have completed a magnificent season in every respect.

They have defended doggedly, enjoyed their goals, put miles under their heels on the turf and fought for their prize. This season they had to overcome their disappointment at getting relegated and have come out victorious, earning them the right to celebrate and savour the sensation with their fans, who have been their staunchest allies. It is a victory carved out of the relentless commitment, tireless hard work and a love of the Blanquiazul shirt by every member of the squad that has made their promotion possible.

Vicente Moreno es el arquitecto de un equipo que se ha mostrado sólido y eficaz para culminar el objetivo de la temporada: volver a LaLiga Santander. El sistema más empleado por el técnico valenciano es el 1-4-4-2, formación con la que su equipo ha salido en un 43% de las ocasiones durante la temporada. La variante más empleada por Moreno ha sido optar por un 1-4-2-3-1.  

Una de las claves de este equipo es la presión que ejercen sus futbolistas al rival. La línea defensiva blanquiazul es la más alejada de la portería de toda la competición. Esto explica que el conjunto perico sea el equipo que más tiempo provoca que el balón esté en campo rival. De hecho, es el quinto conjunto que más cerca de la portería rival recupera la posesión, y el tercero que menos remates recibe de la categoría. 

 Y es que los de Vicente Moreno están sabiendo a la perfección contener a sus rivales. El conjunto barcelonés es el equipo que menos goles ha recibido en lo que llevamos de temporada con 23 tantos en contra, y ha dejado su portería a cero en más de la mitad de las ocasiones. 

En fases ofensivas, el RCD Espanyol se muestra letal. Es el equipo con mayor porcentaje de posesiones finalizadas en LaLiga SmartBank, y el segundo conjunto que más convierte en gol sus ocasiones en el campeonato. 

Asimismo, es un auténtico dolor de muelas para sus rivales, ya que los pericos son los que más remates promedian por partido, 13 en total de media, y a su vez, el que menos remates necesita para anotar. El conjunto blanquiazul marca gol cada 7,4 disparos. 

El equipo de Barcelona es el máximo anotador de toda LaLiga SmartBank y solo en seis encuentros de los 37 disputados, no ha encontrado portería. Especialmente, destaca en las acciones a balón parado, es el conjunto que más goles ha anotado en este tipo de jugadas en la competición, con un total de 19 tantos. 

 

El hecho de que sean el equipo menos goleado depende, en gran medida, del hombre que protege las redes bajo palos: el insustituible Diego López. El cancerbero gallego ha disputado la totalidad de minutos que ha competido el cuadro ‘perico’ y ha sido un auténtico cerrojo. Una figura clave para Vicente Moreno, que ha logrado despejar 75 balones e impedir que 22 de ellos lograsen introducirse al fondo de la red. 

Mérito compartido con una línea defensiva sin fisuras, rápida en las coberturas y en las recuperaciones, que ha cortado muchas de las ofensivas rivales antes de que tuviese que intervenir el guardameta. Una zona con protagonistas como Adrià Pedrosa, David López, Fernando Calero, Óscar Gil y Leandro Cabrera, que acumulan un mayor número de minutos defendiendo la elástica ‘perica’. Cabrera, es el sexto jugador con mayor número de despejes de la competición y el tercero que más pases profundos logra que lleguen a su destino. David López, por su parte, es uno de los jugadores clave del técnico valenciano. Está completando una gran temporada y es el máximo recuperador del equipo, el que más duelos aéreos ha conseguido para los catalanes y el quinto jugador de LaLiga SmartBank que más pases buenos completa.  

La sala de máquinas del RCD Espanyol cuenta con Sergi Darder, con Nico Melamed, Fran Mérida, Keidi Bare y Óscar Melendo como los encargados de canalizar los pases, de organizar el juego y de construir las jugadas orientadas a la meta rival. Un grupo de jugadores que ha ido variando para adaptarse a la coyuntura de cada encuentro, que ha convertido muchos de los pases en asistencias para la delantera y que ha conectado a la perfección con el resto de las líneas del equipo para lograr los objetivos. Melamed, con cinco goles anotados, es el quinto máximo goleador del equipo barcelonés y también el quinto que en más ocasiones ha disparado a portería rival. Darder es un auténtico canalizador y no sólo se erige como uno de los grandes pasadores del equipo, sino que ha generado tres pases de gol, que lo convierten en el tercer máximo asistente del equipo, junto a Raúl de Tomás, Óscar Gil y Pedrosa. 

¿Y en la delantera? Tres magníficos titanes que lo han dado todo y no han saciado su ambición goleadora: Javi Puado, Adrián Embarba y Raúl de Tomás. 

Éste último está siendo un jugador clave para el equipo catalán esta temporada. Máximo goleador de LaLiga SmartBank con 22 tantos, máximo rematador de la competición junto a Uros Djurdjevic y el segundo jugador que, junto a su compañero Embarba, más acciones de alto impacto genera. Adrián Embarba es uno de los jugadores más influyentes en último tercio de la competición y el máximo asistente con 14 pases de gol. Acumula nueve goles en su cuenta persona y es uno de los futbolistas que más remata y que más pases promedia en los últimos 30 metros de LaLiga Santander. El último integrante de la dinamita en ataque es Javi Puado. El joven delantero barcelonés ha logrado 11 tantos y ha concedido ocho asistencias. Es el segundo máximo anotador y asistente del RCD Espanyol y el tercer máximo asistente de LaLiga SmartBank.  

Los tres han completado, junto al resto de protagonistas e integrantes del Espanyol, una temporada magistral en todos los sentidos. 

Han defendido, han disfrutado de los goles, han recorrido kilómetros de césped y han peleado por el objetivo. El sufrimiento del descenso al que han tenido que hacer frente esta temporada, da paso a una victoria y un momento que toca disfrutar y saborear con una afición, que no ha dejado ni un segundo de apoyar al equipo. Un triunfo fruto del compromiso, del trabajo sin descanso y el amor por la elástica ‘perica’ de cada una de las piezas que han hecho posible el ascenso.
