Much-changed lineup
Following their defeat to Real Sociedad, Rayo Vallecano entered their clash against Levante UD in the knowledge that their fate was not in their own hands and needing both Getafe CF and R. Sporting to stumble in order to hand them a possible reprieve from relegation. Paco Jemez opted to make changes across the board, introducing Yoel in goal, Antonio Amaya and Nacho in defence, Diego Llorente in midfield and Javi Guerra up front.
Rousing atmosphere
Despite having their backs against the wall in their bid for survival, the Rayo fans did not leave their team in the lurch. The crowd packed out Vallecas and got behind their players throughout, keeping the faith right to the end.
Pablo Hernandez provides perfect start
Jemez's men got an early shot in the arm courtesy of Pablo Hernandez's textbook volley, which set them on their way. The midfielder ran on to a loose ball following a corner kick and fizzed a superb strike into the bottom corner of the net, past Diego Mariño's despairing dive.
A cushion with a slice of luck
The Madrilenians were eager to get the job done sooner rather than later and did not take long to double their lead. Roberto Trashorras picked up the ball just outside the D and was fortunate to see his attempt take a huge deflection off Jozabed, spinning past a helpless Mariño to make it 2-0.
Emotional farewell
Although Verza halved the deficit by converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Ruben Garcia, Miku snuffed out Levante's hopes of a comeback with the hosts' third goal. However, the bad news coming in from Gijon made the result in Vallecas academic and Rayo ultimately bowed out of the top flight, their valiant efforts recognised by a standing ovation from their fans.
