They were the linchpins of their respective teams, providing balance, security and solidity in defence. Three players who were not just impassable walls at the back, but also lethal in their forays into the opposition box. They are Pablo Insua, Yuri Berchiche and Jean-Sylvain Babin, the three footballers in contention for the 'Best Defender in the 2013-14 Liga Adelante' prize in the '2014 LFP Prize Gala', taking place on 27 October and to be aired on La Sexta (10.30 pm).
Pablo Insua enjoyed an unforgettable campaign with RC Deportivo. The centre back went from being a bright young hope for the Coruña side to become an established player, as one of the revelations of the season in the Liga Adelante. He achieved promotion to the Liga BBVA with Deportivo as an immovable part of their defence, playing in a total of 39 matches. And for good measure, Insua demonstrated that he also has a great eye for goal, scoring three for his team.
Yuri Berchiche, meanwhile, etched his name in the SD Eibar history books by playing an important role in the team’s first ever promotion to the Liga BBVA. He arrived on loan from Real Sociedad, his current club, in order to gain experience and make a name for himself, and the footballer could not have been more successful. Yuri was lord and master of Eibar’s left flank, playing 37 games and scoring three goals for the reigning Liga Adelante champions.
Centre back Jean-Sylvain Babin completes the shortlist of contenders for the 'Best Defender' prize for the division. The current Granada CF player was a stalwart for AD Alcorcón, demonstrating his best qualities in every game: great physical strength, solidity and a superb command of the aerial game both in defence and attack. He was one of the highest scoring defenders in the championship with four goals in 38 matches.
