Early nerves
Real Betis put in a very solid first-half performance and were particularly impressive during the opening stages. As for Getafe CF, the visitors looked rather nervy on their big day, and the fact that R.Sporting and Rayo Vallecano both took early leads in their games only served to further intensify things. In spite of this, Stefan Scepovic came within a whisker of easing the tension with a headed effort which shaved the upright.
Guaita to the rescue
Betis came close to getting their noses in front on two separate occasions during the first half. Firstly, Dani Ceballos was mighty close to breaking the deadlock when he let fly from range, but an even more clear-cut opportunity fell the way of Jorge Molina, who was unable to get the better of Vicente Guaita when put through one-on-one.
Missed chance
After the interval, Getafe had another golden opportunity to have put themselves in the driving seat and Scepovic was once again the man involved. However, the Serbian hitman was left frustrated as his effort from point-blank range was excellently saved by Dani Gimenez in the Betis goal.
Getafe hopes slip away
Getafe's destiny remained in their own hands, but their survival hopes were left in tatters in the second half. Joaquin hung in a cross which was met by German Pezzella who connected perfectly to plant a header beyond Guaita and make it 1-0 on 56 minutes. The visitors' hopes were then extinguished after Ruben Castro made it 2-0 with a 73rd-minute spot-kick. An Alvaro Medran goal in the final stages ultimately proved nothing more than a consolation for Eduardo Esnaider's side.
Time to say goodbye
After six seasons at Betis, Jorge Molina bid farwell to the Benito Villamarin faithful. The striker was handed a starting berth and was afforded a standing ovation when he made way on 65 minutes. This game also marked Juan Merino's last in charge of the Andalusians, with Gustavo Poyet set to take over next season.
