Late own-goal denies Atletico top spot in Malaga

Diego Godin deflects Charles’s shot past Oblak to give Malaga a gritty 1-0 win over ten-man Atletico at the Rosaleda

Oblak saves

Malaga started strongly penning Atletico back and it was Jan Oblak who was called into action first as he dived full length to push an early effort from Charles around the post. The visitors struggled to put pressure on the home goal as Javi Gracia’s men harried them all over the pitch.

Charles again

A keenly-contested game threatened to boil over and Malaga continued to create the most danger. Former Atletico player Ignacio Camacho was at the heart of much of Malaga’s play.

The midfielder floated a ball into the area for Charles in the 37th minute but once again Oblak came to Atletico’s rescue, denying the Brazilian with an outstretched hand.

Red Card

Atletico came into the game on the back of five straight wins in Liga BBVA, and had the chance to overtake FC Barcelona at the top of the standings, but they suffered a setback early in the second period.

Their captain Gabi was sent off when he picked up a second yellow card for a handball and Malaga laid siege to the visitors’ area.

Torres chance

Atletico threatened occasionally on the counter-attack. Substitute Fernando Torres surged into the area after 70 minutes only to be denied by Carlos Kameni in a one-on-one.

Godin own-goal

Torres had another chance soon after but the final few minutes saw Atletico holding on for the draw. Malaga’s pressure eventually paid off when Amrabat’s cross from the left found Charles unmarked, and his low shot deflected off Diego Godin to squirm past Oblak.

It was Charles’s sixth goal in Liga BBVA and earned Malaga consecutive league wins for the first time this season.
