Lamine Yamal stands out in FC Barcelona’s thrashing of Girona FC

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was the star of FC Barcelona’s convincing 4-1 win over Girona FC in Matchday 5

From minute one of FC Barcelona’s match away at Girona FC in Matchday 5, the league leaders were on the front foot and it was Lamine Yamal who truly stood out. The youngster broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with a spectacular goal, before he scored again seven minutes later to make it a convincing half-time lead for Los Azulgranas. Dani Olmo and Pedri added further goals after the break, in the 47th and 64th minutes respectively, before Girona FC scored a consolation goal through Cristhian Stuani in the 80th minute. It was such a different outcome to FC Barcelona’s matches against their Catalan neighbours last season, when Girona FC won both encounters.

Lamine Yamal not only stood out because he scored two goals, but he was also so dangerous in dribbling and creating chances. Once again he proved why he is considered one of the most promising footballers in the world at the age of 17. He now has three goals already this season, after also finding the back of the net against Athletic Club in Matchday 2 of this LALIGA EA SPORTS season. His brace against Girona FC was the second time he has scored twice in one game for the club, after also doing so in February in a 3-3 draw against Granada CF. It’s clear that the Spain international is a quality winger, and he has four assists to his name too this season. With those three goals and four assists, he is the player in the top five European leagues to be involved in the second-most goals, only behind Erling Haaland.

With this victory, Barça remain perfect in LALIGA EA SPORTS and their 15 points from 15 mean they’re very much a contender for the title. Having Lamine Yamal is a huge part of this, and he has now won 17 of his past 18 games for club and country. That’s why it’s no surprise that he has started all five of the matches which Hansi Flick’s side have won already. Not since 2017/18 had Barça won their first five games and they’ve done so in style, especially in their 7-0 win over Real Valladolid.

FC Barcelona are aiming high this season and the youngster spoke about this after the latest win. He stated: “We hope to win every game. If you want to win the league title, that’s the approach you need.” The next challenge will be to take on Villarreal CF, another in-form team, on September 22nd, while Girona FC will look to bounce back when they visit Valencia CF on September 21st in Matchday 6.
