There was plenty at stake on Liga BBVA Matchday 38 and the campaign drew to a close with no shortage of excitement and goals. There were also a number of memorable individual displays from players who bagged themselves a place in the last LaLiga Fantasy Best XI of the season. This time round the standout figure in this lineup, which is calculated based on official LaLiga statistics, was Marco Asensio.
The RCD Espanyol playmaker comfortably claimed the Player of the Matchday crown courtesy of a stunning performance against SD Eibar, which earned him 22 points. He racked up this tally by scoring two goals and setting up another in a 4-2 home victory that ensured his side and the RCDE Stadium faithful signed off for the summer with a smile on their faces.
A certain Jan Oblak is, yet again, the Best XI custodian, after keeping a clean sheet against RC Celta to round off a season in which his Atletico Madrid team conceded just 18 league goals, the fewest in the division. The three-man defence ahead of him is made up of Dani Alves (FC Barcelona), German Pezzella (Real Betis) and Alberto de la Bella (Real Sociedad).
Besides Asensio, another midfielder who caught the eye this weekend was Rayo Vallecano's Roberto Trashorras, who scooped 19 points with a superb showing. Athletic Club's Markel Susaeta and R. Sporting's Jony complete the midfield, having amassed 15 points apiece.
Leading the line in attack is another familiar face: none other than Luis Suarez, the league's top scorer, whose hat-trick against Granada CF fired Barcelona to the title. Gerard Moreno (Espanyol) and Aritz Aduriz (Athletic) join Suarez to form a lethal-looking front three on the strength of their respective 15-point displays.
There you have it, the LaLiga Fantasy Matchday 38 Best XI, brought to you thanks to a completely objective scoring system according to which each and every chance, goal, save, shot and free-kick truly counted on a final matchday that will live long in the memory.
