LaLiga, true to its commitment to collaborating with Spain's security forces and corps, and with the National Police in particular, formalised its donation of seven vans to the Police Intervention Units (UIPs) on Wednesday in the Madrid town of Loeches.
The ceremony was attended by LaLiga president Javier Tebas; Ignacio Cosido, the general director of the National Police Corps (CNP); Florentino Villabona, the general commissioner for citizen security; and Alfredo Lorenzo, LaLiga's director of security and integrity. It was held at the site where the donated vehicles were previously tuned up and kitted out for the specific needs of the services for which they will be used.
Tebas gave a short speech in which he explained that, "LaLiga's work where security is concerned involves supporting the security corps and forces, and the National Police, in the common fight to eradicate violence in sport." The LaLiga president went on to stress that, "We're very grateful to the National Police for their efforts. Just like we demand modernity of our clubs, we also want those who work alongside us to have the best equipment."
Cosido, for his part, noted that, "The supporters that attend LaLiga fixtures conduct themselves in the right way, barring the isolated cases of radical groups that we monitor and keep tabs on." The CNP general director added that, "We work with LaLiga on staff training and the sharing of information. This equipment will allow us to continue to do our jobs whilst modernising. It's a great gesture from LaLiga."
The UIPs, which have National Police Intervention Unit (UNIPOL) vans at their disposal, are designed as mobile public security agencies, whose task it is to act as prevention agents in instances of suspected imminent danger at large gatherings and public events. LaLiga contributes by providing the Police Intervention Units with specific material resources to assist them in their efforts to maintain order at football matches. In this regard, the organisation remains unwavering in its commitment to the eradication of violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.
