Martinez post

In a first half with few clear chances, Real Sociedad came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute.  Full back Carlos Martinez broke clear down the right, and from the edge of the area, curled a shot against the base of the post.

Bruma threatened on the counter-attack for the hosts with the Portuguese forward firing just wide after one such break, despite having Jonathas unmarked in the middle. Bruma’s pace continued to unsettle Valencia after the break as Eusebio Sacristan’s side upped the tempo.

Domenech’s saves

Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech kept his team in the game. He saved from Bruma after halftime, blocked an Elustondo effort on the line, and made up for a mistake with a triple save.

He saved his best save for the 63rd minute when he flew to his left to push away a spectacular effort from Ruben Pardo.

Santi Mina

Valencia forward Santi Mina had the best chances for the visitors. He surged into area but tried to cut back and was caught in the second half, and later pulled a shot just wide of the post. Valencia struggled to make much of an impression as Real Sociedad dominated the longer the game went on.

Martinez-Jonathas connection

It was down the right flank where Real Sociedad finally managed to breach the Valencia defence. Carlos Martinez swung in a cross after 79 minutes, which took a deflection off a defender, and Jonathas was quickest to react and bundle the ball past Domenech.

Three minutes later, Carlos Martinez crossed from an identical position and Jonathas rose to head home for his third goal of the season.

Home comforts

Real Sociedad secured only their third win of the season at Anoeta and ended a four-match winless run. Valencia are still seeking a first Liga BBVA win under English coach Gary Neville after three draws and two defeats since he took the helm in early December.
