At the end of Calle Licenciado Poza street stands the imposing San Mames Stadium, a place that inspires awe even in those who have never set foot there. But for someone like me, who follows every LaLiga game on television, getting to see one live is something that stays with you forever. And it's all thanks to the #LigaBBVAExperience!
I could never have envisaged everything that was in store for me on this trip, through which I got to know Bilbao and indulge one of my biggest passions, LaLiga, in the flesh. Memories are thronging in my head while I try to digest everything I experienced in those three unforgettable days. How could I ever forget the first time I went into San Mames, where I got to stand in the locker room where the Athletic Club players change before every match and pretend to be a coach for a day from the spot where Ernesto Valverde barks out instructions?
Something that has always struck me about Liga BBVA games is the passion of the fans, their chants, the emotion conveyed by those who follow their team and wear their colours staunchly. Meeting the members of Athletic's Deusto supporters' club was an incredible experience. They made me and my fellow visitors feel right at home, and being there gave me an insight into just what it means to follow a team all over the world.
I can't leave out the food. I can add pintxos to the list of words that I'll never forget. Bilbao is a perfect place for anyone who wants to discover Spanish cuisine, which I can assure you is absolutely fantastic.
I'll always remember the thrill of watching the match live, being pitchside just a few metres from my idols and how pumped the atmosphere at the stadium made me feel. There is one thing I'm dead certain of: I'll never forget San Mames. And I've promised myself I'll go back.
