Granada CF beat Athletic Club 2-0 to wrap up matchday seven of the Liga BBVA thanks to two goals from Youssef El Arabi in the second half. The Andalusian side not only picked up its first points at home, but also found the net for the first time this season in Los Cármenes, a stadium that it had suffered three defeats in before now.
After a tight opening period, in the 18th minute Michael Pereira found enough space on the right wing to send a low cross into the visitor's box which was met by Diego Buonanotte. The Argentine's shot was dealt with by Gorka Iraizoz, who punched it out for a corner.
Nine seconds into the restart Markel Susaeta almost caught Roberto Fernández out, but the first goal of the night wouldn't come for a little while longer. Jeison Murillo was brought down illegally by Ander Herrera in the area and El Arabi dually converted the resulting penalty. It was Granada's first home goal of the season.
Ernesto Valverde tried to get the Basque side back into the game by bringing on Iker Muniain, but the lead was doubled eight minutes later. Buonanotte swung in a corner from the left and Pape Diakhaté's flick found the Moroccan who was at hand to grab his second goal of the night, this time finishing with his head.
Granada is now on eight points after finally putting an end to its goal drought, and this important 2-0 win sees the team put five points between it and the drop zone. Meanwhile, Athletic travels back tonight in fifth place and in the European position.
