The Liga Adelante second and third placed teams met on matchday 25 of the championship for an encounter that, despite the heavy weight of exception, did not disappoint. The 0-0 scoreline at the full time reflected an open-ended clash with numerous goalscoring opportunities. The result sees the two teams split the points to remain in the upper echelons of the table.
Although the first real chance fell to Aday in the 7th minute, an effort that was foiled by Iván Cuéllar between the sticks, things changed dramatically shortly afterwards when Elio Amagat was injured. The Asturian side made the most of this opportunity and began to look dangerous in the final third of the pitch, but none of the chances they carved out ended in the back of the net. After that, it was a fairly even contest and the game remained an open-ended affair right up until the half-time whistle.
Both teams went out to break the deadlock and strengthen their positions near the top of the league after the break. Girona had the better of the opportunities in the second half and looked even more likely to score when Sporting’s keeper had to be taken off with a muscle injury. Alberto García came on as the replacement and was up to the task, as Gijon were able to withstand the final threats posed by Pablo Machín’s men, who squandered their best chance in added time.
