The Municipal de Ipurua stadium provided the stage for a very tight clash that ended 1-1. SD Eibar and Villarreal CF came into the match high on confidence having won their respective games on Liga BBVA matchday four.
The first goal of the match came after a double chance for Eibar. Sergio Asenjo managed to see off the first shot from Borja Ekiza but was unable to reach another from Mikel Arruabarrena, who made it 1-0. With the lead, the home team began to control the match and had plenty of chances to extend the gap.
However, Villarreal gradually began to wake from their slumber; Marcelino García's men now had the ball but failed to generate any significant danger in the first half. Their best chance fell to the boots of Cheryshev, but his shot crashed into the crossbar.
In the second half, Villarreal continued to dominate and kept Gaizka Garitano's men in their area. In the 71st minute, Gerard Moreno levelled the scores with a superb finish. Now level, both teams went in search of a goal that would give them three points. Villarreal had a chance on the verge of full-time, but they came up against Xabi Irureta.
